Who i am
As I observe our world, I’m always searching for ways to better express the changes I would like to see. Fulfillment, for me, is brought about with expression that comes across clearly. I’m forever struggling for clearer expression. Focus changes like the seasons. Changes forever need focus. I hope for a world with greater sensitivity of everyone’s needs and tolerance of differences. We need, as a species, to evolve in order to take care of our planet and its inhabitants. Embracing our needs to recognize what we have and further preserve our world’s treasures is the message of love I hope to bring about.
In my sculptures, I hope to be delivering my message. The focus is a variety of human forms, that have an embracing element, and our cohabitants of the planet that need more exposure, perhaps, in a new light. We, as humans, have a duty to uphold: stewards of the earth. I create these visions for the earth, from the earth.
Clay is the medium of earth in art. I choose stoneware clays for its structure and its stone like qualities when it’s fired. My stoneware pieces are created individually to have a representational element as it plays with natural forms. I use a thrown vessel or hand-build a form to use as a canvas or make into a sculpture. My glazes have an earth tone spectrum, are non-toxic and lead-free. I fire to cone 10 so that they may be outside and can withstand the natural elements (sun, water, snow), and for the functionality of serving.
I came to this area to go to school at UCSC in 1990 and studied Environmental Studies, only to be seduced into a different kind of expression, (clay) by my to-be husband and his parents, and never to leave again. I’ve been involved in the art community locally since 1995 through creating, exhibiting, teaching, curating, and promoting.
A respect for clay and a sense of enjoyment, wonder or humor can be found with my work. I enjoy the progression of my imagination in my work in hoping to further focus on my message and broaden the view of stoneware.
